Info zum Album SURVIVING FUNERAL SEASON

Mit „Everything“ dem 2010er Debüt des schwedischen Duos Winding Stairs legten sie die Messlatte für weitere Alben schon recht hoch. Wunderbar inszenierte Indie Pop Songs, immer wieder verglichen mit Kate Bush, Goldfrapp, Kristöfer Aström oder anderen Gleichgesinnten, die den Pop als ausufernde und stilistisch unbegrenzte Spielwiese begreifen und nicht als eindimensionale Einbahnstrasse in Richtung Erwartungshaltung des Hörers.

Wie schon beim Debüt ist auf SURVING FUNERAL SEASON erlaubt was gefällt, musikalische Wandlungen und Stilmixe sind eindeutig gewünscht und auch möglich, denn die wunderbare Stimme von Sängerin Lina Wedin hält alles zusammen, sie ist der rote Faden, der dem musikalisch vielfältigen Unterbau das gewisse Etwas verleiht. Das funktioniert dann auch in Stücken wie BUT MAYBE, das vordergründig von Martin Wahlqvists Stimme getragen wird.

„RARE TREAT“ die erste Single erinnert mit ihrer fröhlich-naiven Melodie an das Debüt von Nelly Furtado, während das darauffolgende IN COLOUR mit Klezmer Einflüssen spielt, um unvermittelt durch Electronica Versatzstücke eine gänzlich andere Richtung anzusteuern. Das im Original von José González geschriebene 'CROSSES' klingt nach der Bearbeitung wesentlich aufgeräumter, dunkler und gleichzeitig intimer. So geht es auch bei den folgenden Stücken stets um eine ganz eigene Version dessen was Pop, Indie  - man nenne es wie man will -  kann und darf und nicht darum, welche Song Matrizen bereits da sind.

SURVIVING FUNERAL SEASON ist ein Album, dem man die entsprechende Zeit einräumen sollte, bis sich all die kleinen Feinheiten, Spielereien und Songideen entfalten.

Es lohnt sich.

Die Band zum Album: Surviving Funeral Season is produced by ourselves. Our trusted partner Martin Molin from Detektivbyrån has mixed the record and played several of the instruments, such as theremin on Crosses. Throughout the recording, we have bounced our ideas off Nicholaus Sparding from Love Is All, who has also enhanced the album with guitar playing and world-class falsetto singing in Widows Walk.

For this recording, we have given our all. No complicated recording schedules, just one day and one instrument at a time. We have refrained from intellectualizing, and embraced the investigative.  We have turned over every stone and approached the songs from different perspectives. In a way, we feel like we have directed the album, rather than produced it. The result: a record that, irrelevant of trends, rests on the foundation of what popular music is all about; "a way in and a way out."

Info zum Debüt Album EVERYTHING:

Skandinavische Popmusik, vor allem wenn sie sich eher dem Segment Independent Musik zuordnen lässt, ist ja oft sehr individuell, bisweilen etwas krumm, meist aber sehr eigen.
Ob nun Ane Brun, Thomas Dybdahl, Maria Mena, Britta Persson – die alle in ihrer musikalischen Unberechenbarkeit große Gemeinsamkeiten mit dem schwedischen Duo WINDING STAIRS aufweisen – selten geht ein Song den geraden Weg, Melancholie und Melodie präsentieren sich oftmals Hand in Hand und keine Idee ist zu abstrakt, um nicht ausgelotet zu werden.
Auch EVERYTHING das Debüt von Martin Wahlqvist und Lina Wedin alias WINDING STAIRS aus dem schwedischen Göteburg zeichnet sich durch Ideenreichtum, die große Popgeste und minimalistisch verschrobene Songideen aus.
Während „Shadow Stripes“ fast schon einen Fuß auf die Tanzfläche setzt, „Automatic Moves“ stadionkompatible Glücksgefühle frei werden lässt, gehen Songs wie „Yellow Light“ oder „When Lines Turn to Arrows” einen Schritt zur Seite, lehnen sich geradezu lässig zurück und verbreiten loungig – relaxte Stimmung.
EVERYTHING ist – allen Ideen zum Trotz – ein äußerst homogenes, vielschichtiges und in sich geschlossenes Gesamtwerk.

Soft and hurtful pop with ingenius arrangements. It´s a little summey of
 what Winding Stairs music is about. However, it´s never bland or
 pretentious. Jazz drums find their way in now and then. Melodies swirl
around like branches in a leafy tree. It feels fresh and classic at the
same time. Kind of like newly pressed sheets.

Winding Stairs produces a finely balanced blend of danceable pop and sad melodies. The hit song Shadow Stripes is modern pop at its best – not out of place on mainstream radio, but offering listeners a lot more as well! Clever music that moves high above the ground.

Gothenburg duo Winding Stairs – Martin Wahlqvist and Lina Wedin – has with their sugary-sweet, melancholy and slightly experimental indie pop an ability to sneak in under your clothes and caress the frozen skin. This is relaxing music for rainy summer days and dark autumn nights. Nothing you put on when it’s party time, for which the contents on Everything are too fragile. But when you really want to indulge yourself, Winding Stairs has a lot to give and the best and finest songs are like little jewels in a wood filled with pine boughs and cones. To listen to Winding Stairs at its best is a bit like putting on a warm sweater for chilly summer evenings when the heat from candles are no longer enough. This is the quality I appreciate most from songs like “12”, “Automatic moves” and the jazzy “When lines turn to arrows.” Single releases “Shadow stripes” and “Do not stay up too late” are beautiful as well. Winding Stairs is very promising duo and Everything is an asset among albums on the record shelf. I strongly suspect that the album will be heard from many CD players come autumn, including my own.
